Modern football
Just watched highlights of Newcastle v Fulham and the Newcastle penalty which was shocking, two things Jamie redknapp says which really riled me .
" he's been really clever there" no he's just cheating
" he's got every right to go over there " again no he's cheating again! Modern football at it's appalling worst

Re: Modern football
Wait for all the grumpy old men to tell everyone how rubbish modern football is and yet they watch it whenever possible.

I’d much rather watch football now than the 80s, it’s much more exciting.

Re: Modern football
Yes, no more celebrating goals, diving actively encouraged, waiting for 5 minutes to see if your toenail is offside.

So much more exciting.

Re: Modern football
goose, not sure it's more exciting, but it certainly is better quality. It was exicting in the old days, too.

Re: Modern football
As opposed to cabbage patch pitches, long ball football and 40 yard passes back to the keeper?

Re: Modern football
But it was exciting!

Re: Modern football
Football as a spectator was much better then than now, we enjoyed it better I still like it but it’s too sterile

Re: Modern football
Not for me, less goals, less shots, less technical, constant passing it back to the keeper.

What's got your gander then?

I get your point def an element of " back in my day " its just the element of how cheating is now just treated as an act of skill/ intelligence which I find hard to stomach

Re: Modern football
It’s not perfect I agree, but I’d much rather watch modern football than 80s football.

Atmosphere-wise though I get it.

Re: Modern football
Even in the 90s and actually 00s it was much more exciting, you don’t have to go back to the 70s. Bang on that it has become too sterile in recent years, cheating is basically overlooked and the astonishingly inept application of VAR has almost killed it as a spectator sport. I only watch our games now, whereas I used to watch a fair bit. Shame really, but it’s only a game.

I was watching it live and found myself just fucking laughing out loud. Almost every decision is a gay one. Fucking bunch of poofs.

When a lesser team they don't like win a penalty against a top four side, they go

'Not enough contact there for me'

'Made a meal out of it'

Everyone looks on football when they were younger as the time to have been there or the good old days. All you old cunts will obviously look back on the 60s, 70s and 80s as the best years and rightly so. Then you got my “generation who would look on the 90s and 00s as the good old days. Likewise whose come after me would be looking on their years as the best. It’s nothing to do with the football.

This is scientifically proven. When we feel young and full of hope we remember the good times and forget the bad.

But it would break the internet if someone enforced it.

Re: Modern football
I think in all sports there were more "characters" years ago whereas professionalism has taken over and most sportsmen these days are like robots. I never used to like Tyson Fury for instance but I've changed my mind now because he is a character.

With football though I think individual skill has decreased to an extent. You don't see too many dribblers anymore like a Gazza or Devonshire but that may be that it's not encouraged in case possession is lost.

Re: Modern football
I think GOING to football pre 00's was a better day out as there was still a rawness about it.

The actual game has improved as boots, balls, pitches and players fitness levels have improved beyond recognition.

There were players who liked a dive but it wasnt as blatant as it is now but the play acting these days is off the scale.

As for the way players are protected these days i reckon thats a reflection of society in general where everyone is wrapped in cotto wool.

All in all it's a better watch but not half as much fun. If that makes sense.

Re: Modern football
Couldn’t agree with the OP more and it is the reason I don’t watch nearly as much as I used to.

The commentators, rule makers and referees are as bad as the players who do it.

It would be easy to stamp it out but there isn’t the will to do it because they see it as a skill.

Re: Modern football
Even early 00s seems like a life time ago now. The season after BCFC away last game in championship was great fun, but still not a patch on what a match day was like in the 80s, yes there was some shit times but unless you’ve experienced the excitement of being in a packed terrace away at millwall, Spurs, manu etc then you won’t know what I’m on about. I would say the football is generally miles better now though, apart from the diving,
but that’s nowhere near enough compensation
